ALL, THE MEXICO WE LOVE

Mexico City gets its own emoji

Emojis have become a huge form of expression and Mexico City’s Laboratorio Para La Ciudad wanted its own from the people who know it best. That’s why we, along with others, sponsored a contest for designers to submit emojis that they felt captured all that Mexico City is, called “How to Capture a City in 20 Symbols.”

Not only does the project serve as a way to get the city its own visual representation, it is also a valuable way to assess what Mexico City’s residents love the most about CDMX. In announcing the competition, the founder of the lab, Gabriella Gómez-Mont, told Fast Company Design, “We’re very intrigued with the relationship between a person and a megalopolis, how people actually relate to it, and what emotional and visual responses will we get.”

The contest was announced back in June and finalists Itzel Oropeza Castillo, Eduardo Camacho Mayén and Pedro Rodrigo Grajeda Ortega, and Ivonne Andrea Torres and Martin Robert Cook, were announced this week. From a torta-eating axolotl to Frida Kahlo, the emojis depict all different aspects of Mexico City.

The sticker pack of emojis will be made available on the Apple Store and Google Play. We were proud to have sponsored the event, and you can see all of the finalists and their designs on the labs Twitter.
