The power of music, the craft of making music, and the precarious devotion of living one’s life to entertain people with music is captured in the new Netflix documentary Shawn Mendes: In Wonder. The documentary film follows the award-winning Canadian singer as he travels on a world tour, while simultaneously giving fans an inside look at his personal life, which includes cameos made by his girlfriend, singer Camilla Cabello. Full of youthful, positive energy, Mendes makes superstardom look just as fun as anyone would imagine, but also human in that he struggles with the same issues a lot of us are challenged by, like making coffee, being vulnerable, and getting sick at inconvenient times. Mendes also gets candid about the pressure of fame and the loneliness that sometimes comes from his non stop schedule.

Shawn Mendes: In Wonder was directed by Grant Singer and produced by Saul Germaine. As the film follows the singer’s experience on and off stage during his self-titled 2019 tour, it was shot in various countries across the world. The Lift’s Fuad Abed Dalton had the pleasure, albeit a secretive one, of producing the portion of the documentary that was shot in Mexico, which was the last stop on Mendes’ tour.

“We worked with Saul Germaine in the past and it was a pleasure, so when he reached out to us on a heavily guarded NDA job, we had to find a way to make it work,” Fuad described. “We slowly started to find out what the project was about and we were so happy we were a part of it! It’s strange to see the clips of this project now. Just to think that Shawn was finishing his tour last year before Christmas and seeing the crowds gathering outside waiting for the concert. Or remembering the screams of all those teenagers cramped into an indoor stadium seems so distant. It was great to see the simple feelings and emotions behind a star that big. At the end of the day, it shows how we really are just human beings.”
